Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (May 28, 2019) – Kaleb Johnson battled a frustrating racing weekend that was once again heavily influenced by the weather as rain allowed just one full night of competition out of three planned evenings of racing.

With the scheduled weekend opener on Friday at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, falling to rain, Johnson began the holiday racing weekend on Saturday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., where rain still played a factor.

“We had to start last (eighth) in our heat since we didn’t have a point average,” he said. “It’s always a challenge to qualify for the A Main when you start in the back of the heat. It was even more challenging that night because the track was unusually heavy and a bit rough due to a lot of rain they’d received there before Saturday. Plus we were in the first heat. It made it really difficult to pass and I felt lucky to move up one spot and finish seventh.”

Johnson started ninth in the B Main, needing to finish in the top four to transfer to the A Main.

“We were able to move forward a bit,” he said. “We were up to sixth coming to the white flag when I was able to get around a guy up top for fifth. I threw a slider at the guy running in the final transfer spot in the last turn. He was able to get back under me and beat me by less than a car length to the checkered.”

While it was a frustrating finish to the evening, Johnson took it in stride.

“It was a tough way to end the night,” he said. “But we learned some stuff about racing on a heavier track, where we haven’t done as well as we’d like. So we were able to come away from there with that.”

Johnson and the team towed to I-80 Speedway to compete with the Sprint Series of Nebraska on Sunday night, when the evening started out much better before it came to another frustrating, albeit different, conclusion.

“We started on the front row of our heat race and won it,” he said. “It obviously helps to start in front, but I felt we had a good car. I was looking forward to the feature. We were scheduled to start fifth and the track was starting to slick off, which is what I like. But then it started sprinkling and there was a lot of lightning so they called the show.”

Johnson hopes for drier weather with two days of racing scheduled for this weekend, beginning Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.

“We’re planning to race both the 305 and the 360 at Jackson,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to it since we haven’t been able to race there yet this year.”

Johnson expects to make his second career start at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, the following night.

“We don’t have a lot of high expectations going into Knoxville,” he said. “It’s a track where you need a lot of laps to become real competitive. We’re just looking forward to getting in as many laps as possible and learning as much as we can.”
