Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Sept. 9, 2020) – A top-five performance highlighted Kaleb Johnson’s weekend at Huset’s Speedway with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series.
“Our weekend was a lot of fun,” he said. “I was a little concerned going into it since I had never raced a 360 at Huset’s before and most of my racing this year has been at Knoxville, which is a track you drive about the opposite from Huset’s. But I enjoyed ripping the top of the track as well as the atmosphere of racing in front of a large crowd both nights.”
Johnson gained precious seat time at the tight bullring on Saturday night and it didn’t take long for a close-up meeting with the historic track’s concrete wall.
“I started fifth in my heat race and had moved up to third when I clipped the wall and broke the Jacob’s Ladder,” he said. “I lost a spot and hung on to finish fourth.”
With repairs made, Johnson rolled off 15th on the feature starting grid.
“I passed a couple of cars using the bottom of the track at the beginning so I figured that was a good place to be,” he said. “But before I knew it, I got passed several times and dropped back to about 16th or 17th. I finally moved to the top of the track with about six or seven laps to go and was able to pass a few more cars as we finished 12th.
“I was a little frustrated with myself for not changing my line sooner, but we were able to load the car into the trailer in one piece and it turned out to be sort of a test and tune for Sunday so that counted for something.”
On Sunday night, Johnson just missed the feature redraw by one position after finishing fourth in his heat race. He lined up ninth in the 24-car main event.
“I was able to pass a few cars on the bottom and then a few more up top,” he said. “I made it to third behind Lee Grosz and was having a fun race with Carson McCarl before I lost the brakes with a few laps to go. Then Carson and Clint Garner both got by me and I held on to finish fifth.
“The finish was a little disappointing, but overall, I was really pleased with our night. We had a fast car that ran well both high and low. I’m really looking forward to returning to Huset’s in a couple of weeks.”
Up next for Johnson will be his only visit to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., this year for competition with the Midwest Power Series during the Jerry Richert Memorial on Saturday.
“I’ve only raced at Cedar Lake a couple of times, but it’s become one of my favorite tracks,” he said. “I’ve done pretty well there considering I haven’t run many laps. I’m looking forward to returning there and hoping for another good run.”
